Across systems

Designing intelligence for commerce. Studying intelligence in the world.

I build large-scale AI systems at Shopify and study how intelligence emerges in nature, tools, and people. This is the notebook where those explorations meet.

I build things that make sense of the mess — in code, in data, and in the wild. My work lives at the point where scale meets human reality: aligning billions of products into a usable catalogue, designing models that can actually be trusted, and turning loose ideas into tools that ship.

Away from screens I do the same thing, just with different subjects. In the Okavango, the Serengeti, or an Indian tiger reserve I point a camera at the oldest form of intelligence — instinct — and try to frame it with the same discipline I bring to systems work. Each trip is an experiment in observation, patience, and context: building a picture from fragments until the whole pattern shows.

The through-line isn't titles or companies. It's a habit: take something complex, distill it, respect it, and reveal its order. That's as true when I'm architecting an AI pipeline as when I'm underwater with a camera or coaching a team through a hard decision.

California is home, with my wife and two dogs. I live between high-bandwidth sprints and low-bandwidth silence — code reviews and dawn safaris, experiments and long dives. This site isn't a portfolio so much as an ongoing ledger: projects, ideas, and field notes from trying to see clearly across systems, people, and nature.

Systems & Scale

  • Designing product knowledge graphs and catalogue intelligence at Shopify.
  • Developing multimodal AI models that blend language, vision, and structured data.
  • Architecting distributed infrastructure that keeps global commerce understandable.

Fieldwork & Observation

  • Documenting wildlife across Africa and India through stills and film.
  • Experimenting with aerial, underwater, and low-light cinematography.
  • Writing long-form field notes that merge ecology, behavior, and storytelling.

Guiding principles

  • Curiosity over comfort.
  • Coherence across code, culture, and ecosystems.
  • Respect for context — human, ecological, and computational.

Home base

California — close enough to the Pacific to dive, and far enough from distraction to think. It's where the prototypes, photo archives, and dogs all live under one roof.

About this site

A living archive spanning AI research, systems design, field expeditions, and reflective writing. It evolves as I do — less a portfolio, more a ledger of curiosity.
